These Bad Habits Reduce Productivity For Remote Workers

bad habits

Working remotely has its advantages, as many people have realized over the past few years. The rise in popularity of working remotely is mainly due to convenience, flexibility, and the saving of both time and money. However, working remotely does come with challenges that aren’t faced by those who work in a traditional environment. Certain bad habits can reduce productivity and create a home working environment that’s not conducive to staying on task and getting things done efficiently. Avoid the following habits if you wish to increase your productivity as a remote worker.

  • Multitasking – The fast-paced world often praises multitasking, but it can actually lead to poorer job performance. Multitasking takes your attention away from each thing you’re working on, preventing you from focusing on one project at a time. While it may work for some people, it’s often better to put 100% of your focus on one task at a time.
  • Not taking breaks – When you work alone, you may be tempted to power through the day without taking breaks. While it can seem efficient to rush through lunch, perhaps eating quickly at your desk while you continue to work, this can lead to burnout quickly. The brain and body both benefit from breaks during the workday. Take advantage of that time to take a walk, eat a simple meal away from your computer, or simply have some quiet time so you can return to work ready to tackle your next project.
  • Not sticking to a routine – Remote work can be flexible, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a daily routine. Waking up around the same time every day not only helps you sleep better but also prompts your body to know what to expect each day. You may not have set work hours, but it’s still important to preplan your schedule for the week and know when you plan to get your work done, along with how you wish to delegate your non-work hours to household tasks, hobbies, or other obligations.

As a remote worker, you’re responsible for maintaining good work habits to keep you on track during the day. Keep in mind that multitasking is not always the best way to finish tasks, and working through the day without breaks can lead to burnout. A good work routine with healthy work habits can help you accomplish your work goals efficiently.
