Dealing With Busy Season Stress As A Small Business Owner

For many small business owners, late fall into early winter is one of the most stressful times of the year. Not only may you experience an increase in business during this time, but you’re also likely facing end-of-year tasks that need to be completed to set up your business for success in 2026. An increase in sales and profit is certainly a positive thing for small business owners, but it can also create additional stress during an already hectic time of the year. Getting started early and taking some steps to prepare for the busy season can reduce some of the stress and help you tackle your workload as the year winds down.

Get started early

The earlier you start preparing for the busier time of year, the less stress you will encounter once that time arrives. While it’s already late in the year to get started, you can still take some steps to get ready. Keep track of what you did to prepare and what would have made business operations easier so you can look back on your notes and get started even earlier next year. While it can seem excessive to start preparing for the winter season in spring or early summer, it can help significantly reduce your workload when that time arrives.

What can be done ahead?

Think about what tasks you put off to the end of the year and consider how you can work on those tasks earlier to simplify them. Don’t wait until the last minute to compile end-of-year records or complete tasks that must be done before the first of the year. Order products, equipment, and materials far in advance, which can give you time to shop around for the best price and allow you to avoid the seasonal shortages that can happen if you wait until the last minute to place your orders.

The holiday season is quickly approaching, which means the busiest time of year for many small business owners. Get started with planning for it now, and even earlier next year if you want to decrease your workload and stress at the end of the year. By working harder earlier in the year, you can simplify your business operations, allowing yourself a bit more time to enjoy the end-of-year festivities.
